MEET DR. CAVAZOS

 Dr. Javen Valerie Cavazos is proudly a San Antonio Board Certified adult psychiatrist.  Her professional career has been dedicated to understanding mental health and helping others.  The mind and people's behaviors fascinate her.  She wanted to give you the opportunity to learn about her story.

 

She is  a Native Texan that lives in San Antonio, Texas.   She believes so many facets exist in life and its amazing how it makes us who we are.  She is proudly a first generation Filipino American.  She embraces her culture as it motivates her to uniquely be her.   Dr. Javen Valerie Cavazos grew up in a small town in southeast Texas.  Friday night lights was always a highlight.  Dr. Javen Valerie Cavazos was in a military band and enjoyed cheering for the local team.   Dr. Javen Valerie Cavazos attended the University of Texas at Austin.  Austin was so different than the small Texas town that she was raised in.  The culture, the people, and the city, it enlightened her.  

 

After Austin,  Dr. Javen Valerie Cavazos received her Medical Degree at the University of Fatima in Manila, Philippines.  Although Dr. Cavazos was a Filipino American living in Manila, it enriched her understanding of where she came from.   Medicine is a very prestigious career path in the Philippines.  Dr. Javen Valerie Cavazos got in touch with the community helping impoverished and underdeveloped societies.  Yet  learned about medicine that emphasized the importance of culture, how family, and support is very important.  Dr. Javen Valerie Cavazos  appreciated medicine from another outlook.  Her medical school gave her the opportunity to perform her clinical Medical Rotations in several fast paced large cities with a diverse population such as Chicago, New York City, and University of California in San Francisco.  

 

Dr. Javen Valerie Cavazos was selected to a pre Match program in  an Adult Psychiatry at SUNY Downstate Affiliate Brookdale University in Brooklyn, New York which is a level 1 trauma center.   She was exposed to very difficult cases in all spectrums of mental health. Her rigorous psychiatric training program was tough it challenged her, she adapted, she learned.  Each case she was exposed to had an individual approach but the underlying goal of understanding each person helped her develop relationships with patients to give them the best care.   Amongst her peer resident physicians, she was chosen to  represent the Psychiatric Program with the other Medical specialties in the  committee of interns and residents which focuses on improving patient care.    

 

After completing her Adult Psychiatric medical training program, Dr. Javen Valerie Cavazos returned to Texas where she received her certification as an ABPN diplomate and Board Certified in Adult Psychiatry.  Early in her career,  she was involved in Medical Education and was an Associate Professor for the University of Texas Health Center teaching residents  and medical students about psychiatry.  She was also an associate medical director of hospital systems for inpatient and intensive outpatient programs.   Here in San Antonio, Dr. Javen Valerie Cavazos established several years of private practice in an outpatient psychiatric clinic here.

Dr. Javen Valerie Cavazos enjoys watching  the San Antonio Spurs but also loves the Houston Rockets.  Her husband is from South Texas and they love incorporating his Mexican culture and her Filipino culture into their lives.   They have two kids, enjoy making arts and crafts, and participating in their growth through distance learning.   Dr. Cavazos loves cooking meals that remind her of her unique culture and experiences.     She grow vegetables in her garden and finds it soothing and fulfilling by watching them evolve from seedling to its full grown self.    Dr. Cavazos also  has a rambunctious Jack Russell terrier.   This is who Dr. Javen Valerie Cavazos is as your doctor.
